DESIGNING THE FUTURE IN THE BORGHI OF ITALY

WHAT | WHO WE ARE

BORGOALIVE!™ is the project promoted by CEA – Concilio Europeo dell’Arte addressed to all small Italian municipalities for the promotion and valorization of the regeneration path undertaken by their administrations – and supported by the Communities – implemented following the Best Practices of environmental, economic and social sustainability for the villages, elaborated by CEA together with the many partners of the initiative. The projects and the relaunching experiences are shared on the Digital Editorial Platform BORGOALIVE! to strengthen the identity and the image of every BORGOALIVE! in Italy.

Values and objectives

TERRITORIAL VOCATION | HISTORICAL AND CULTURAL HERITAGE | RECEPTION | PARTICIPATORY COMMUNITIES | INCLUSION | SHARING

For years the CEA has been betting on the Italy of small villages (borghi) and on their ability to resist, renew themselves and put in system the territorial vocations with the skills of people: not only to stem the danger of isolation, migration of young people and the inexorable depopulation of these areas, too long considered ‘marginal’ in Italy, but to push and support these places, which constitute the backbone of Italy, to express all their potential.

The challenge is also to rediscover the authenticity of the local dimension: the identity values in which a community recognizes itself represent the first real resource capable of relaunching the borghi of Italy as a ‘reserve of future’ for our country.

DIGITAL INNOVATION | ATTRACTIVENESS | LIVEABILITY AND WELL-BEING | ECONOMIC AND SOCIAL REGENERATION

The enhancement of the borghi today necessarily passes through the courage to welcome technological and digital innovations as an opportunity to promote the welfare and improve the quality of life of the inhabitants and tourists who rediscover them, increase the competitiveness of the territory and attract visitors and new residents.
Our habits and work routines have, for most of us, changed: this is the opportunity to rethink the borghi also as new employment contexts, where supported by technology and widespread connectivity that allow to zero distances from the urbanized centers of medium and large cities and emerge from the context of the internal areas of the country, increase economic and social well-being and protect the cultural heritage of the borghi.

LANDSCAPE PROTECTION | ENVIRONMENTAL SUSTAINABILITY | ECOLOGICAL TRANSITION | CIRCULAR ECONOMY

In addition to this, the run-up to environmental sustainability that has finally taken root in all national and supranational programs, has imposed the need to rethink development models also, and above all, in those small realities where the world ‘has not stopped’, but, in countertrend where the project of re-inhabiting the Italy of the borghi is gaining ground.

WHAT WE DO? | ACTIVITIES AND PROJECTS OF BORGOALIVE!

  • We accompany municipalities in activating models of innovative and sustainable local economy
  • We recognize the value of the redevelopment of the borgo by the Administration and its Community
    (Municipality BORGOALIVE!’ recognition)
  • We promote the opportunities of territorial regeneration of BORGOALIVE! Municipalities at national and European level on the BORGOALIVE! Editorial Publishing Platform [discover I M ITALY]
  • We share experiences in order to disseminate the culture of experimentation in Italy of participatory development models and to transfer competences to other borghi

HOW? | THE 9 BEST PRACTICES

GUIDELINES FOR AN INTEGRATED LOCAL DEVELOPMENT

The borghi joining the BORGOALIVE! project are proactive communities that develop, implement and share strategic plans to revive the places they inhabit: each borgo operates in compliance with the Best Practices Guidelines drawn up by the CEA, in collaboration with its project partners. These are the same Best Practices that guide the borgo and encourage it to continue in the regeneration path undertaken, supported by the BORGOALIVE! Platform. [Best Practices_PDF]
